  1. Wash the dal just before cooking.
  2. Boil the water and then add the dal to it.
  3. Cook it over a medium heat in a covered pan.
  4. When the grains start to split add the dry spices.
  5. Cook it over a medium heat until the water and dal make a thick soup consistency.
  6. Fry onion in butter until golden brown and add to the cooked dal.
  7. Serve it hot with rice or chappaties.
